E3 Impression Hands-On: PSP Go!

Alright PSP fans, the few out there, here is the PSP Go! As you found out before Sony’s Press Conference, there was a leak about the PSP Go! on the newest Qore episode on the Playstation Network. Well it’s real and I was able to get some hands on with this new device. This lovely device is set to release on Oct. 1st for the retail price of $249.99.

When I picked up the device you can tell the differences between the current PSP version and the PSP Go! The first game I was able to load from the Go! was Gran Turismo. It ran the game pretty smooth with little to no wait time at all, which was really nice. Then I decided to load up Final Fantasy VII. Everything also ran smooth for a PS1 game. Did one battle in the game and it really brought be back when I played the game the first time on the PS1. That was when I decided to let the device go and give some of the other eager fans a try.

There were some answers that I was able to get out of Sony. Yes there will be a expandable memory slot, which will use microSD from to 16 to 32gb. They are working on a trading system, for those who already have a PSP Go! It is not completely confirmed yet, but they are still in talks about a trade in system for the current UMD format into the digital forum. You will also be able to link up your PSP Go! and your PSN account together, so you are able to download your PSP Go! game anytime and anywhere you are at, wireless connection pending. You can also link up your PSP Go! game up to 5 PSP Go! system and 5 PS3 system.

There are some down sides of the PSP Go! though, Yes, there is no physical copy of the game that you will purchase for the PSP Go! All the games that you want will be on PSN. Who’s to say that kids will be buying mature titles behind the parents back? Maybe they will have some sort of verification system to make sure that kids are not buying mature titles. The price point of each game all depends on titles. Which means the high end title name will get the high end price and so on. There is also no second analog stick. The reason for this, which they told me, is that it would be hard for the developers to make game for the PSP Go! and for the current PSP. Which I understand, but still there is enough room for a second analog stick and since the games will be for digital download than why not?

My impression of the system is this simple. For the price point of $249.99, I think it is a bit overpriced for a system that does not have a UMD drive. The fact that the price for each game will be title base which is fine and all but please don’t tell me that you will be charging me $40 per download. I do like to have the ability of the extended memory for the system so you can have up to over 50gb of space for the PSP Go! Maybe they will announce that the PSP Go! will be able to use the 2tb microSD. Overall I am planning on getting the system and try it out and see if everything they have told me will be true.
