Watch the final developer diary for The Occultist, and see just how open-ended the story might end up being in The Occultist
We have had our fun looking at The Occultist up to now with the many behind-the-scenes looks at the game, but all things need to come to an end. So, here we go with the final video that DALOAR has to share before the game launches on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC this coming April 8th. All to give us a deeper insight into the game, along with a good reason that things are going to be left up to us to figure out in The Occultist. Not just in puzzles and exploration in the game, but also along the lines of certain things being left vague for us. Sometimes it is to help keep the tension, and sometimes just to make us think of what darker horror could be lurking around in the game world. If all goes to plan, well, that could lead to one amazing title.
This new diary that we have from the team takes us into a little more on how we should expect to be scared in The Occultist. Not from just cheap jump scares and the like, but from the audio, atmosphere, and our own thoughts, causing the tension to boil up. All in a slow-burning, suspenseful way before we are slapped with the true horrors in the game. Not a terrible way to do it, but worth noting for those who need to have something on screen or cannot handle this kind of tension. Also worth noting is that The Occultist is going to leave things up to us to interpret when it comes to the world and story. Sure, that is something that might have us all coming back to experience the game a few times, but for those with TikTok attentions, that is going to drive you bonkers with things not being spoon-fed. I am a fan of it, but I know that a good number of gamers are not going to enjoy needing to sit and think things over to understand.
The Occultist — What Remains After The Fear
Daedalic Entertainment and developer DALOAR present the fifth and final episode of The Occultist Dev Diary series, offering one last behind-the-scenes look ahead of the game’s release on April 8. The episode dives into the psychological foundations of the experience, focusing on ambiguity, player interpretation, and the kind of tension that lingers long after the game is over.
Instead of relying on traditional jump scares or definitive answers, The Occultist builds slow-burning suspense through silence, anticipation, and imagination. The developers highlight how leaving questions unresolved allows players to form their own interpretations and remain connected to the story beyond the final moments.
At the same time, the episode explores protagonist Alan’s transformation as he is forced to confront his past and emotions throughout the journey. The result is an experience where fear gradually fades, but its emotional impact stays with players well after the screen goes dark.
The Occultist will launch on April 8th for PC, Xbox Series, and PlayStation 5!
Are you ready for The Occultist to finally launch out there, and will the tension be built as well in the game when it does? Do you like to think about the events of games, or do you prefer to have every bit of information fed to you directly? Will your mind make up something worse to fear in these instances in the game, or will you need the team to offer up something to startle you back into your panic mode every now and then? Have those thoughts tossed into the comment section so we can all discuss them. There should be a little more to look at for just the gameplay when it comes to The Occultist, so pay attention to the website for all of that. Either the website or all of our social channels, so you can be ready for this one when it does land in just a few more weeks.
