A new action-platformer, The Gunk, has been revealed and will have us heading out into a new world to clean up, well, the gunk
Another big title that was shown off during the Xbox Briefing was The Gunk to lure in more of an audience on the Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC next year. Lure in might be a way to explain it all, but given the world that we are seeing from Thunderful here, it is how it feels. In the best of ways as The Gunk looks to add some fun and dark platforming to the systems next year while giving us something that looks like it could have a deeper meaning to it all. Something along the lines of FernGully for those that have not just jumped down to see the announcement video we have for the game. That happens so often here.
Anyway, in The Gunk we will be heading into a story filled with space haulers that have set out for a planet lush with natural resources to bring home. All kinds of life and creatures are out there ready to be hauled away. Sadly, that is about when the planet erupts with corruptive gunk that ruins everything the team was going to bring back. That is when we have to choose to head out and save this planet from all of that while maybe learning a bit about ourselves along the way. All with some cool looking gadgets that are not fully explained as of yet. Have a look at the video just below to see just what I am talking about here.
The Gunk — Official Trailer
Swedish game developer/publisher Thunderful has announced that their third-person action-adventure title The Gunk will be exclusive to the Xbox Series X, Xbox One as well as Windows PC. The game is slated for release in the fall of 2021.
Thunderful’s Image & Form team, the developers behind the acclaimed SteamWorld franchise, have been hard at work for some time on their next game, The Gunk. As opposed to the SteamWorld games, The Gunk is developed in full 3D using Unreal Engine — and this time the protagonists aren’t robots.
The Gunk stars a duo of gritty space haulers, struggling to make a buck as they chance upon an untouched planet brimming with life. They’ve come to gather alien plants and other valuable resources, and it looks like they’ve hit the jackpot… As they start uncovering dormant secrets of a shattered civilization, however, they must save the planet from the curse of a corruptive gunk parasite while desperately keeping from getting caught in a spiral of festering mistrust.
The Image & Form team focuses mainly on highly refined gameplay mechanics, and prides itself on a process of ‘excessive iterative polish’. Whereas previous games from the team have been released on multiple platforms, The Gunk will be exclusive to Xbox Series X, Xbox One and Windows PC when it releases next fall, whereas new SteamWorld games are also in the making.
What thoughts do you have for The Gunk based on all of this and does it fit in with what you were expecting from the title? Do you see the parallels from the film I mentioned or am I reading into things well before the game even comes to market? Did you get lured in deeper here or were you already all the way in on the consoles mentioned above? Let us all know what you are thinking down in the comments and then feel free to discuss them all. If there is more for The Gunk, we will share it all on the site for you. Just be sure to keep checking in for all of that and much more.
