A new survival shooter, Scavengers, has been revealed and will be using some new technology to keep Scavengers’ AI ahead of the curve
Get ready to add another survival title into the mix as Scavengers has been announced and coming from Midwinter Entertainment. It will be their flagship title and will be hopefully making some big pushes for the gaming industry in terms of multiplayer survival shooters out there. Yes, that is the basics of Scavengers, but there is of course much more coming for it all. Like the fact that it will take place in a not-too-distant future where a new Ice Age has come and a new mutated disease is messing with all of the world’s life. Sounds like a whole lot of dystopia to have and try to survive with your friends as the AI of the game and other players try to put a halt to all of that.
Not many details for Scavengers have been given as this is just an announcement and filled with concept art more than anything, but it does look like the team here is using some new cloud-based solution to run the servers for the game. Why is this important? Well, if all goes as planned, the AI of Scavengers will be “smarter” and give more of a real-player challenge as each major section will be running on its own instance and not requiring one server to do all of the computations. The “smartness” of the AI still boils down to how well it is programmed, but this should keep it from having hiccups during live play. It sounds interesting, but it will still come down to implementation more than anything.
Scavengers — Reveal Trailer
Scavengers puts players in the role of young survivors fighting in a not-so-distant future, where cataclysmic events have triggered a new ice age. The game will combine exploration, survival and combat elements, while maintaining a focus on teamwork and cooperative game mechanics.
By dividing the action between multiple servers in the cloud, all of which contribute to building and running a seamless and consistent world, SpatialOS allows more sophisticated artificial intelligence, more AI entities and players occupying a seamless, shared environment, and a larger, more detailed and more deeply simulated game world than can be supported by the traditional client-server architecture used in online gaming.
Players will begin each game by equipping their scavenger, exploring the wilds, fighting and allying with other human players to complete objectives, gathering resources and battling against AI-controlled enemy factions. Large and unpredictable AI populations, combined with the balance of co-operation and competition between the human players, will create rich, repeatable gameplay.
I do have to say that Scavengers sounds bit like The Division in general to me, just with more mutants and monsters. So, something like the open world of The Division mixed with all of the horrors of Metro 2033. Granted, this is just how the basics we have from the announcement here so things could change or be different when all is said and done. This is just how Scavengers sounds to me right now. I am still excited to see where Midwinter Entertainment takes it all, but this is where it is starting for me. Please make it all over into its own thing at the end of the day.
What are you thinking about Scavengers as it all stands here? Do you think that the server structure and build will give us what the team is aiming for or will it be still on the code and design for how it all plays out? Do you agree that it sounds like two other titles I mentioned or will it be its truly own thing at the end of the day? Give us your thoughts down in the comments and then feel free to discuss. I am sure we will have many new updates for Scavengers and as they come, we will have them up on the site. Keep checking back in to see them all.
