The first gameplay for Hide And Shriek has been released and now we can see just how Hide And Shriek matches will play out later this October
Earlier in the month we saw a new horror game announced called Hide And Shriek. It’s a new one on one multiplayer title coming from Funcom and that was more or less about the extent of what we knew. Well outside of the goal of Hide And Shriek being to scare each other until there is a defined winner and a defined user. Well now we know a bit more and it is just in time as the game launches on Steam for PC on October 25th and we do need to see how the game plays before making our final judgement. Or at least willingness to give the game a try.
Below you can see the first bit of gameplay for Hide And Shriek in all of its glory. While it states that you can use all manners of spells and other things to scare you opponent, it looks like it is all about the jump scare as each gives you some kind of score to help decide the winner. At least that is the assumption here as it doesn’t look like there is any kind of HUD in the game and there is obviously a winner and loser here. Unless you just count the fun of making each other shriek in terror as a win. I know I do at least.
Hide And Shriek — Gameplay Trailer
‘Hide And Shriek’ is a one vs. one multiplayer game where players collect points and scare the other player through the use of spells, traps, and jump scares. Players can summon dark demons, set up elaborate traps, and jump out of hiding to scare each other senseless. The catch is that you are both invisible, and in order to find and scare the other player you must observe telltale signs such as doors opening or objects flying through the air, or trick them into clever traps that will reveal their position.
“We’re very excited to finally show off how the game actually looks and plays,” says Game Director Romain Amiel. “We’ve had people test the game recently, and they all struggle to compare it to other games. The simple truth is that ‘Hide And Shriek’ offers something new and different, and as a team we’re very proud to be bringing that to gamers. You have to experience it for yourself.”
In my head I know I was picturing something a bit different back when Funcom told us about Hide And Shriek but I can see the fun and allure here. It does harrow back to the traditional cheesy jump scare tactics used in haunted houses and horror mazes but in the virtual space. There really is nothing better than forcing a scary looking face/mask onto the screen to get that great scare. Although I am a bit curious to see if there is any indication that it is coming. Like some sound of stepping on a trap or something. Things I think about though…
What are your new thoughts on Hide And Shriek now that we have some gameplay? Do you see it being a small fad for a while or do you think it could catch on and grow much larger? Do you think that what we see here is what we are going to get in the long run or will there be different maps and “spells” at launch? Let us know what you think of it all in the comments and discuss. For more on Hide And Shriek as it comes, be sure to stay right here as we’ll try to keep you as updated as we can on it all.
