Mafia: The Old Country Shows That We Will Need To Succeed With Whatever It Takes

Mafia: The Old Country — Whatever It Takes

See more of the gameplay for Mafia: The Old Country as well as how this title is truly taking things back to the Mafia roots

Since we had the announcement for Mafia: The Old Country, we have all been waiting to see just what the gameplay was going to offer up and how things might be changing for the game out there. Hangar 13 is back at it with 2K pushing things along, so we know it has the basics intact at the very least. Now, as we get closer to the August 8th release date for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, we get to see just how Mafia: The Old Country is going to handle. Also, we get to see more of how this IP is going back to a linear story instead of the open worlds we have had in all of the more recent outings for the IP. An interesting choice, but now we get to see whatever it takes to get this one out to us.

You can hop on down to the gameplay we have for Mafia: The Old Country below, as well as a bit of the behind the scenes on how the game came to be out there. A word to the wise, though, is that it does feel and look like they are leaning hard into the linear part of it all and giving us more of a cover-based shooter than we have had before. That will be mixed up with some fun knife play and other cinematic events, but it does feel like maybe other action titles out there more than it does a Mafia. At least, that is how it feels to me. Maybe that will change a bit once we get closer to launch and see any of the other gameplay mechanics that will be tossed our way, as of now, it feels like a basic action game just set in the Sicilian setting and era to help drive the story. Not terrible, but not what would be expected from the IP, as we have had over the past few titles we have had out there.

Have you been looking forward to a Mafia game that removes more of the open world out there, or does this one feel a little off to you, too? What other gameplay mechanics could we see in the mix of this one, even if it is a linear event we will be going through? How often will we see some of these cinematic breaks in the flow of combat, and will it truly make the game a bit more immersive than we think? Take some of those shots down to the comment section and discuss it all as you so wish to do.
