A new tactical-adventure game, Mutant Year Zero: Road To Eden, has been announced and Mutant Year Zero aims to bring us a unique take on the post-human Earth
We had a nice tease a few weeks back from Funcom that they were working on something new and now it looks like the cat is out of the bag as Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden has been announced and coming to the PS4, Xbox One, and PC sometime in 2018. At least it is safe to assume that this was what they were teasing even if they are not directly developing it like other titles in their wheelhouse. That part is being done by The Bearded Ladies, a team that consists of some pretty talented people from many of our favorite past titles like HITMAN and PAYDAY. They will be putting their talents to work for Mutant Year Zero: Road To Eden and it looks like they have already done some amazing things.
While the announcement of Mutant Year Zero: Road To Eden did not come along with some gameplay to look at, all we have is a cinematic trailer, there is a nice description of what we can expect. As it looks, the game is heavily inspired by XCOM and will have many of the tactical elements that made that title so popular including the turn-based stuff. There will also be some stealth options to have in the game that can let you get a better set up before attacking whatever it is we are going to attack with our weird group of three. Each will have their own “specialty” that can be mutated in the game to help improve and make your side of things a bit easier in the game. Just as we should have assumed.
In terms of the setting for Mutant Year Zero: Road To Eden, it is set in a post-human Earth setting where something went insanely wrong. Nothing has been directly stated, but it does sound like it could be any number of the world-ending events that we all are afraid of from the heavy Sci-Fi side to the real-world ideas we have now. Either way, the world we know is gone and we are here with these three mutants to explore and survive the new ruins and rumble of the world. Those three being a Dux (a 4-foot tall talking duck), Bormin (a boar with serious anger issues), and Selma (who looks like a human but I am sure there is something more we do not know as of yet). Sounds and looks like a pretty unlikely group, but it is what we have.
Mutant Year Zero: Road To Eden — Cinematic Reveal
Mutant Year Zero: Road To Eden is a tactical adventure game combining the turn-based combat of XCOM with story, exploration, stealth, and strategy. Take control of a team of Mutants navigating a post-human Earth. Created by a team including former HITMAN leads and the designer of PAYDAY.
- Tactical Combat: Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is the ultimate fix for your tactical strategy addiction. Dive into a deep, turn-based, tactical combat system inspired by the XCOM games.
- Explore A Post-Human Earth: Journey through a post-human world of abandoned cities, crumbling highways, and overgrown countryside. Check back at the Ark, a neon-bathed oasis of ill repute and questionable characters, to restock your supplies and plan out your next adventure.
- Control A Team Of Mutants: A duck with an attitude problem and a boar with anger issues; these aren’t your typical heroes. Get to know Dux, Bormin, Selma, and many other characters each with their own unique personality and deranged perspective on the world and their situation.
- Master The Stealthy Approach: Sneak through shadows to avoid conflict or to catch enemies unaware. Real-time stealth allows you full control of approach: sneak into an enemy camp, position the team of Mutants to your advantage, and gain the element of surprise.
- Unlock Mutations: Unlock new mutations and abilities for your Mutants, such as Selma’s Stoneskin, Bormin’s Charge, and Dux‘ uncanny ability to sneak into a camp full of enemies unnoticed, despite being a 4-foot tall walking, talking duck with a crossbow.
- Dynamic Environments: Use the environment to your advantage. Stay out of floodlights, hide from line of sight, or just blast down fully destructible walls and buildings and wreak utter havoc.
- Loot, Loot Everywhere: From makeshift slingshots to high-powered rifles and top hats to police vests, make sure you equip your Mutants for the dangers ahead. Nothing says post-human quite like a mutated boar in spiked metal armor charging at you with a blunderbuss in his hands.
