Mother Machine — Open Beta Playtest

An open beta is on the way for Mother Machine and we get to see a little more of the fun Mother Machine could be offering up

Those looking to have a colorful and chaotic little gremlin adventure out there, can start to gear up to take on a new open beta on the way for Mother Machine. This is a new title that Maschinen-Mensch is working on for the PC and the team is looking to get some extra feedback and help building out the game. As long as you have the free time to hop on and play Mother Machine from November 22nd until November 25th. A rather short time, but some time to give you a chance to see how the game is coming along as well as help them iron out any of those kinks that could be in the game still. Just as a normal playtest should be done out there while working with a quality assurance department.

I am sure that this might be the first time many out there have heard about Mother Machine, so let us break things down a bit before the beta test kicks off. It is a new multiplayer action-platforming title that will have our little gremlin friends out there trying to traverse a new world with three other friends. A world that was once invaded, colonized, and then abandoned by humans with an AI left behind with some very specific goals. That is where the titular Mother Machine comes in and creates more of our little beings to venture out and explore while collecting various things along the way. All for some dark purpose we will get to learn along the way, most likely. Have a look at the bits of gameplay just below and a taste of what is to come not only in the game, but also in the beta that will be kicking off next weekend.

Mother Machine — Open Beta Playtest

Maschinen-Mensch has announced the open beta playtest for its chaotic new multiplayer action-platformer/RPG hybrid, Mother Machine. Beginning on Friday, November 22nd at 10:30am CET and lasting until the same time on Monday, November 25the, a work-in-progress build of the game will be made open to the public for the purposes of optimizing and fine-tuning core mechanics and online multiplayer functionality. Players interested in participating in the playtest can do so by visiting the game’s Steam page once the playtest goes live on November 22nd!

Built using Unreal Engine 5 and inspired by the studio’s experience in procedurally-generated game design, Mother Machine is a one-to-four-player co-op action-platformer with RPG elements, set in the eerie cave networks of a derelict space colony. Players control one of many grotesquely adorable “chaos gremlins” who are endlessly sent to death, then revived by their malfunctioning robot mother in search of resources, technology, and the answers to the planet’s darkest mysteries.

This beta playtest will feature multiple levels for players to explore, each of which is set across a different biome, as well as a central Hub to connect with other players and level up their gremlin of choice. There will be limited customization options available, but necessarily won’t carry over for players who return for future playtests.

This playtest will offer several new features not available to participants of past playtests, including mouse & keyboard support, new UI animations & icons, enhanced visual and audio effects, and more! This playtest will have no player cap, and will be available on Steam.

In Mother Machine, players can:

  • Control a colorful chaos gremlin capable of seamlessly running, climbing, and leaping through intricate procedurally-designed alien caves, where no one playthrough is the same
  • Extend and deepen the active abilities of their gremlins with a vast range of mutations, altering gameplay to suit their preferred playstyle and desired difficulty
  • Join games at any time with easy drop-in multiplayer for up to four players, increasing the levels of both chaos and competition
  • Share the experience with friends of all skill levels, as the game’s balanced co-op mechanics allow expert players to join together with novices, making the mania more accessible
  • Enjoy a silly, soulful world and an engaging narrative about the limits of technology, the nature of loneliness & the power of family
  • Experience unique & personal moments created by emergent gameplay, endlessly replayable generative levels & satisfying progression

Set thousands of years in the future, Mother Machine takes place on a distant planet once colonized by humans but since abandoned. Left behind by her creators, an Artificial Intelligence faced a problem: without a purpose, she needed to find a way to protect her digital mind from breaking under the burden of being forever alone. Her solution was to create creatures she could care for.

True rascals, with an affinity for mischief and chaos, these little gremlins were bioengineered by their mother to withstand and survive a harsh alien environment. 3D-printed from organic filament by their godlike Mother Machine, these creatures are tasked to collect and explore a vast cave network of a mysterious alien planet, brimming with biodiversity and peculiar life-forms — but the further the gremlins venture, the more they find out about the dark secrets of the planet’s history, and the true ambitions of their mechanical mother.

Does Mother Machine sound like a title that will scratch an itch for you or will it be one you will wait to see down the line? Will this be a true playtest or is this how the team is going to handle the servers between the various players teaming up? What do you think the darker purpose of things will end up being out there and will we get a bigger look during the gameplay? Head on down to the comment section of things to discuss it all and leave those thoughts. We will have what we can for Mother Machine, so please keep on checking back in for all of those updates and the many other things we will dig up along the way. It should be a fun little ride with this game and everything else we have in general.
