A new movie for Outlast is on the with Lionsgate and big producers giving Outlast more life
Those who have been hoping to get something more for Outlast need to start getting a little more excited out there. Not that we are getting a new title from Red Barrels as of yet, but more in the way that they just signed a deal with Lionsgate to make a feature film based on the game. If it will be just a retelling of the original Outlast, one of the spin-offs, or something truly original in the story and world… well… that is still to be determined. For now, we just know it is coming and from a person who has done some massive work in the horror genre over the years.
While the production studio that has been tapped for this has had some massive hits, like SAW, Outlast is going to be in the hands of Roy Lee. The same person who brought us all It, Barbarian, and Late Night with the Devil so you can get an indication of the work from before. Granted, everything still boils down to getting a good script, actors, and all of the other little things that make up a film but at least there is a solid lead in charge. Maybe we will get more of a found footage kind of movie out of all of this, as I do not believe that has been one tackled by Lee before and the Outlast universe works so very well with all of that already. That is the way I would go with it all if I was in charge.
Red Barrels is teaming up with Lionsgate and renowned horror producer Roy Lee to develop a feature film anchored in the rich and horrifying universe of the Outlast series, with JT Petty, Red Barrels scribe, working on the film’s screenplay.
Prolific horror film producer Roy Lee (It, Barbarian, Late Night with the Devil and Strange Darling) will lead the adaptation. Lee will bring to the film the same terrifying authenticity that has made the critically acclaimed psychological horror game franchise a fan favorite for over 37 million players worldwide.
With Lionsgate’s success and expertise in high-quality cinematic storytelling in the horror genre as the studio behind the Saw franchise, as well as the recent hits The Strangers: Chapter 1 and Imaginary, and many other hit films over the decades, along with Red Barrels’ reputation for pushing the boundaries of horror in gaming, the upcoming adaptation promises to deliver a gripping experience that captures the franchise’s signature elements—immersive atmosphere, chilling sound design, and relentless suspense.
Since its launch in 2012, the Outlast video game series has evolved as a single-player narrative-driven survival horror franchise beginning with the original game and followed by the prequel Outlast: Whistleblower and the standalone sequel Outlast 2. Most recently, The Outlast Trials launched in 2024, offering an immersive multiplayer experience for up to four players. Beneath the psychological terror that defines each Outlast installment lies a recurring theme of manipulation and abuse of power, with corrupt institutions exploiting people for their own sinister purposes.
The Outlast film adaptation marks an exciting new chapter for the franchise, expanding its reach from gaming to the world of cinema.
Where do you sit with the Outlast movie announcement that we have here? Will you need to see who else is attached to the project before getting excited or are you that diehard of a fan of the IP? Will it be a good found footage project to have or would it also work as a normal kind of horror movie that follows our cast around? Run on down to the comment section to let those thoughts be heard out there and then get along with the discussion. As more for the Outlast movie is announced, we will add it all here for you. Please keep on checking in for all of that and everything else that might still be on the way.
