The Mortal Kombat teases were right and we now have Mortal Kombat 1 here to be officially announced
The rumors and speculation seem to have been correct, as we now have the official announcement here for Mortal Kombat 1. This is the next phase in the IP that NetherRealm Studios has kept going for thirty years now. All of that to bring the IP back to the origins of things with it sounding like Mortal Kombat 1 will not only be starting a new era in the IP but also acting a bit as a reboot to it all. We should learn more in the coming months and then for sure on September 19th, 2023. That is the release date we have coming for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC for this one. So not a whole lot of waiting will be needed now.
Even with the quick turnabout we are getting for Mortal Kombat 1, there is not all that much known about the game at this stage. The story looks to have Fire God Liu Kang reshaping things out there and twisting up various characters and their stories. Not a huge thing for the IP with that happening a few times already. Those changes though, do seem like they might be affecting the gameplay with a new Kameo system in play that sounds like it might be adding in a “tag-in” feature to the Mortal Kombat line while shifting up a few of the other fighting game things.

Mortal Kombat 1 releases on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC on September 19th, 2023.
The announcement video we do have for Mortal Kombat 1 does give us a few characters to see with the official line-up so far being Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, and Johnny Cage. More are listed to come in the basic version of the game and we know there is going to be all of that DLC to come too. Given that it is listed that the pre-orders will give us early access to six more characters and a skin for Johnny Cage using the likeness of Jean-Claude Van Damme in the mix. The original version of the character in Mortal Kombat was based on the fighter, so it further pushes us into a true reboot realm for this now.
Were you holding out hope that this would be more of a Mortal Kombat 12 or do you like the idea of going back to basics? Will the story carry over from the last few titles or will this be a completely new timeline or universe with the only links being Liu Kang? Will the Kameo system be more than a tag-team thing and could we see move sets a little more simplified down the line? Head to the comment section and let the discussion and speculation keep flowing. Now that we know Mortal Kombat 1 is on the way, we will be able to keep all of the news for it coming your way too. Keep checking back in for all of that and everything else we will have here.
