A new rogue-like dungeon crawler, Hades, is announced and challenges you to escape the Underworld that Hades lords over
Going down the list of new games announced during The Game Award again, we have another rogue-like dungeon crawler to add into the mix called Hades. Wait, what? Yes, it looks like someone has gone and worked on a game all about the big guy and that someone would be Supergiant Games. Awesome. That is unless you are looking for something that is accurate to the source material that the God of the Underworld is actually from. I will ignore all of that for now and just focus on the announcement of Hades right now and then fact that you can get in on its early access right now over on the Epic Games app.
More or less, Hades places us in the Greek Underworld as the child of the god who no longer wants to stick around his dad’s house. Given that it is rare for even Olympian gods to come and go from the place, it will be a daunting task for the son of the god of the Underworld to do so. That is what we will need to do here in the hand-drawn world crafted here where it looks like other gods will aid in. I am guessing via upgrades that we will not lose when we inevitably die in Hades. It is a little unclear here, but about what I can see in the following trailer for the game. I guess I may have to go and give it play to truly find out.
Hades — Early Access
Defy the god of death as you hack and slash your way out of the Underworld in this rogue-like dungeon crawler from the creators of Bastion and Transistor.
Play In Early Access: This is a living game in active development! Expect regular updates with new features, events, characters, places, powers, and more.
The truly irksome thing about Hades here, at least for me, is the claim to be diving into the stories and lore that deity is in, yet fully missing the key elements. So far to the point that I have yet to see many other call our Supergiant Games for the slight. Unless there is a huge reveal in the game that we are actually the son of Thanatos and not Hades in the game. I doubt that and I have a feeling that will drag down what looks to be some solid gameplay and level design in the game. I looked past all of the things that God Of War changed to make a great game, but this one is sitting in a weird place for me still.
What are you thinking about Hades here with what little we know? Do you think it will live up to the other games that the developer has given us or will it be lost in the mix of the marketplace it is on? Am I being a mythology snob here or should the team have looked a bit more into things before setting them down for marketing? Let us all know down in the comments and then discuss. As updates for Hades flow out there, we will update you here. Just be sure to keep checking back in for all of them in due time.
