A new song for Mirror’s Edge Catalyst has been released from CHVRCHES that will be featured at Mirror’s Edge Catalyst’s opening and ending
It sounds a bit weird to say that Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is going to have a theme song of sorts but that is the easiest way to describe the latest update here for the game. No DICE hasn’t crafted some catchy new song like all of those Saturday morning cartoons we loved but instead have reached out to CHVRCHES to craft something for them. And craft something they have as it looks like the song here is slated to be used for the open, ending, and a hidden place in Mirror’s Edge Catalyst when it lands on June 7th for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Sounds like a “theme song” to me.
Before I dig into the rest of my thoughts on this track titled “Warning Call” I’ll give you a chance to hear it without bias. I will add in here though that it was crafted by the band to perfectly depict the world of the game and some of the themes that this dystopian future has for us in Mirror’s Edge Catalyst. Without any further gilding the lily here is the new song.
Mirror’s Edge Catalyst — Warning Call
“We were honored to be asked to contribute to the soundtrack for Mirror’s Edge Catalyst. The sound of CHVRCHES’ music resonates with the minimalist sci-fi dystopia of the Mirror’s Edge world, and we feel that the song complements the drama, emotion and empowering themes of Faith’s story,” says Iain Cook from CHVRCHES.
I do prefer my dystopian futures a little darker and more “angry” for sure but I know that just isn’t the setting of Mirror’s Edge Catalyst. While I do see this song fitting in to a specific level it does feel a little out of place once the more “poppy” portions of the song kick in. In fact until the vocals kick in the whole song feel right in place. This isn’t a knock the artist’s performance but I’m just not seeing that whole thing blend in to the level that we are going to see in the game. This is the opening/ending song and personally I don’t “feel” it. Could just be me…
What do you think about Warning Call here being the lead track for Mirror’s Edge Catalyst? Do you get the vibe the band and developers were going for or does it feel out of place a bit? Do you think it works a lot better without the vocal track to marry into the franchise? Let us know what you think and discuss in the comments below.
